Swedish artist Susanne Simonson's psychological portraits register like memories or dream-like longings that hover and disappear into ghostly blurs and soft color fields. Photo-derived images seem to turn away from the viewer in elusive stuttered phases, smeared into the past tense and the realm of quiet contemplation through lyrical, sweeping paint strokes. The moodiness and introspection of the figurative subjects is enhanced by the washes of color that surround them. Simonson's composed and reductive paintings emphasize the fleeting, apparitional quality of thought and experience.

Born in 1969, Simonson studied at the Royal University College of Fine Arts, Stockholm, and has exhibited in Europe, including the Prague Biennale 2, 2005. This is her first exhibition in the United States. A 48-page catalogue of her recent work with an essay by Swedish writer and critic Eva Runefelt is available.
